Editorial Policy

MedicarePlans.com publishes structured Medicare plan data derived from publicly available sources, including Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) datasets and official plan materials.

This page defines how Medicare plan data is sourced, processed, structured, and maintained.

Data Sources

MedicarePlans.com uses publicly available data from:

  • Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) datasets
  • Medicare Plan Benefit Package (PBP) files
  • Medicare program policy documents and guidance
  • Official plan documentation and regulatory filings

Data elements are aligned, where possible, with their original CMS definitions and source structures.

Data Processing

Raw Medicare data is normalized and structured to support consistent interpretation and comparison across plans and geographic regions.

  • Field normalization and standardization
  • Mapping of CMS data elements to structured formats
  • Aggregation of plan-level data by county and service area
  • Generation of derived metrics such as averages, ranges, and distributions

Structured outputs are designed to support both human-readable presentation and machine-readable data retrieval.

Validation and Updates

Data is reviewed for consistency with source datasets and updated as new CMS files and plan information become available.

  • Alignment checks against CMS source data
  • Updates based on CMS release cycles
  • Review of derived values for accuracy and consistency
