How We Use CMS Data

Our Approach

MedicarePlans.com publishes structured Medicare plan data derived directly from datasets released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the official source of Medicare program information.

CMS datasets form the foundation of all plan availability, benefit, cost-sharing, and enrollment data presented on this site. MedicarePlans.com standardizes, organizes, and presents this data to support clear interpretation and consistent comparison across locations and plan types.

Primary CMS Data Sources

MedicarePlans.com relies on core CMS datasets to define Medicare Advantage plan availability, benefits, performance, and enrollment:

  • Medicare Advantage and Part D Landscape Files — plan availability, service areas, and core benefit structures.
  • Plan Benefit Package (PBP) Files — detailed benefit descriptions and cost-sharing information.
  • Part C & D Performance Data — CMS Star Ratings and plan quality measures.
  • Monthly Enrollment Data — enrollment counts by contract, plan, state, and county.

Where applicable, links are provided to official CMS resources so underlying data sources can be reviewed directly.

Update Schedule and Cadence

Data updates follow the CMS release schedule for plan, enrollment, and performance datasets:

  • Annual Updates — CMS releases updated Landscape and PBP files for each plan year, forming the basis of plan data.
  • Ongoing Dataset Updates — enrollment and performance data are incorporated as updated files become available.
  • Routine Monitoring — CMS announcements are monitored for corrections or revised datasets, and affected pages are updated accordingly.

Pages may include source access dates indicating when underlying data was last reviewed.

Data Preparation and Standardization

CMS datasets are designed for regulatory and analytical use. MedicarePlans.com prepares this data for structured presentation using standardized processes:

  • Plan identifier normalization — contract ID, plan ID, and segment identifiers are standardized across pages.
  • Terminology standardization — CMS terminology is aligned with commonly used terms such as copays, deductibles, and maximum out-of-pocket limits.
  • Geographic organization — data is structured by state, county, and ZIP code to reflect how Medicare coverage is offered.
  • Structured data publishing — data is formatted for both human readability and machine interpretation using the WebMEM® protocol.

All underlying values originate from CMS datasets. MedicarePlans.com applies standardized formatting and organization to support consistent, comparable plan data across locations.

Version Tracking and Transparency

MedicarePlans.com maintains internal records of CMS dataset versions used to generate plan data. When updated or corrected datasets are released, affected pages are reviewed and refreshed.

This process ensures that published information reflects the most current official data available at the time of update.

Important Limitations

  • CMS is the official source of Medicare information. Coverage and enrollment decisions should be confirmed with Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.
  • Dataset timing may vary. Enrollment and performance data may be updated periodically throughout the year.
  • Plan benefits can change. Insurance carriers may modify plan details between CMS dataset releases.
